Trains collide in Egypt's Nile Delta, killing at least three people.

CAIRO—On Saturday, two passenger trains crashed in Egypt's Nile Delta, killing at least three people, including two children, according to officials.

The collision occurred near Zagazig, the capital of Sharqiya province, according to a statement from the country's railway authorities. According to Egypt's Health Ministry, at least 40 people were hurt in the crash.

Train derailments and collisions are prevalent in Egypt, where an outdated railway infrastructure has been hampered by poor management. In recent years, the government has announced plans to enhance the railways.

In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi stated that around 250 billion Egyptian pounds, or $8.13 billion, will be required to adequately repair the North African country's dilapidated rail network.

A train car was crumpled by the accident and surrounded by spectators, according to video from the crash site. Men attempted to lift the injured through the windows of a passenger car.

Last month, a train collided with a truck crossing the rails in the Mediterranean province of Alexandria, killing two people.
