Authorities say at least 24 people were killed in a bus collision in central Morocco.

RABAT, Morocco—At least 24 people were killed in a bus collision Sunday in the central Moroccan province of Azilal, making it one of the country's bloodiest such incidents in recent years.

According to local officials reported by Morocco's official news agency MAP, the tragedy occurred when a minibus carrying people flipped on a bend while its route to the weekly market in Demnate, a tiny town in central Morocco.

Authorities responded to the area, together with the Royal Gendarmerie and Civil Protection, to begin rescue efforts.

An inquiry into the cause of the accident has begun.

In August of last year, a bus collision east of Casablanca killed 23 passengers.

On Friday, a semi-trailer truck collided with a bus transporting a group of teenage athletes in southern Morocco, killing 33 people.
