A power failure at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) forced the cancellation of many flights on Monday, Labor Day.
According to Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) spokesperson Eric Apolonio, the power fluctuation occurred around 1:05 a.m., as reported by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
The NAIA said in a statement that the power loss happened at Terminal 3 and that delayed flights are to be expected because only standby power is providing power to its key facilities.
“Standby power is now supplying electricity to critical facilities enabling computer systems of airlines and Immigration to function partially and enable processing of both inbound and outbound passengers,” NAIA said.
“As a result, delayed flights shall be expected,” it added.
According to a Facebook post by NAIA, 40 domestic Cebu Pacific flights were canceled owing to the disruption.
Apolonio stated that APG774's arrival at the airport had been postponed till 1:20 a.m. beginning at 1:06 a.m. He stated that the jet had to perform a go-around before landing on the runway.
According to NAIA, an engineering team from MIAA and technical specialists from Meralco are presently investigating the source of the power outage.
In an interview with Dobol B TV, Meralco representative Joe Zaldarriaga stated that the electric power distribution firm had no problems.
“Initial indications point out na, as far as Meralco is concerned, doon sa mismong area kung nasaan nandoon ang Terminal 3, wala naman kaming problema,” he said.
(Initial indications point out, as far as Meralco is concerned, we have no problem in the area of Terminal 3.)
“Yung tinitignan lang namin ngayon ano ba ang nag-cause dito. (We are now just looking into the cause of the power outage),” he added.
The administration of the MIAA apologized to its passengers for the inconvenience caused by the power outage.
According to NAIA, MIAA operations employees are immediately supporting impacted passengers with their problems.
