A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shakes Colombia's capital, killing one.

BOGOTA—A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 shook Colombia's capital Bogota on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey. Geological Survey, causing terrified homeowners to rush into the street and killing one woman.

There were no initial reports of serious damage from the 6.1 magnitude quake, according to Colombia's national geological office.

“It was strong, and lasted a long time, said Adrian Alarcon, 43, who works near the capital’s busy Park 93 district.

“It makes me feel fragile,” he added. “Life changes in a second. You can’t do anything, just run for your life.”

Mayor Claudia Lopez stated on X, the social networking site previously known as Twitter, that tragedy struck in the southeast of the city, where one lady died after falling out of a window during the quake.

“We deeply regret the only serious incident reported: a woman threw herself from the 10th floor of a residential building in Madelena, apparently due nerves. We’re accompanying those who were with her in the house with medical teams,” Ms. Lopez said.

Colombia's Congress reported damage to the chamber of representatives, where the earthquake jolted a plaster ornament loose from the ceiling and onto a desk below.

No one was injured, according to a notice put on X by the House of Representatives.

Colombia's civil defense service said that people in the whole municipality of Calvario, southeast of the city, had been evacuated. The quakes damaged the windows in the region.

The agency reported a landslide in adjacent Villavicencio and said its personnel was monitoring for more damage.

As crowds flooded the city's streets, the first tremor was followed by aftershocks. The second quake was judged by Colombia's national geological office to be 5.6 magnitude, with an aftershock measuring 4.8.
