7 people were killed in a clash between soldiers and gunmen in rural Mexico.

MEXICO CITY - A gunfight between gunmen and army forces in rural western Mexico killed seven people, including one soldier, according to officials in Michoacán state on Tuesday.

According to state Interior Minister Carlos Torres, the clash happened Monday when an army patrol was attacked near the town of Ciudad Hidalgo.

Torres stated that eight individuals had been apprehended.

According to local media, the assailants may be members of the Jalisco drug cartel. Jalisco has been conducting a territorial war against local gangs in Michoacán for years.

Meanwhile, three guys were detained on Tuesday in the adjacent city of Zamora, Michoacán, for unlawfully transporting a lion. Drug lords regularly keep tigers, lions, and jaguars as pets and occasionally feed them to their competitors.
