BROKSTEDT, Germany—Two people were murdered and numerous others were injured after a man attacked them with a knife on a regional train traveling between Kiel and Hamburg in northern Germany on Wednesday, according to officials.

Police in the Danish border state of Schlewsig-Holstein said the guy, who was only slightly hurt, was being treated at a hospital. He was apprehended at a railroad station in Brokstedt.

According to officials, three individuals were badly hurt and four were mildly injured in the incident.

The motivation for the attack was not yet known, according to authorities.

Police were investigating at the Brokstedt train station, Deutsche Bahn said on Twitter, adding that certain trains between the two cities had been canceled.

Photographs from the site obtained by Reuters showed forensics professionals gathering evidence on the station platform.

State interior minister Sabine Suettelin-Waack said in a statement that federal and state police were cooperating on the inquiry.
