In northeastern India, a stone quarry collapses, killing at least 17 people.

GUWAHATI, India—A tropical storm-caused torrential downpour caused a stone quarry in northeastern India to collapse on Tuesday, killing 17 quarry workers and left another 12 unaccounted for, according to authorities.

Senior police officer Rahul Alwal reported that rescuers were able to extract two workers alive from the rubble and found the remains of those slain at the quarry in Melthum, which is located around 6 kilometers (3.5 miles) from Aizwal, the state capital of Mizoram.

According to Mr. Alwal, rescuers were looking for other survivors and attempting to contact stranded personnel.

Numerous quarries in Mizoram are used to extract stones for use in building and road construction. However, a lot of businesses remove stones without obtaining the necessary environmental approval.

A stone quarry collapsed in Mamit town, the state, last year, killing seven people. Twelve laborers lost their lives in a similar disaster in 2022.

According to Mr. Alwal, four additional persons perished throughout the state in other landslides.

Following tropical cyclone Remal's landfall in Bangladesh on Monday, India's northeastern provinces are now suffering intense rains.

The region may see landslides and structural damage from heavy rains, according to a warning from India's Meteorological Department. The area also has thatched dwellings.
