12 People Hurt When Qatar Airways Dublin Flight Experiences Turbulence

DUBLIN—Dublin Airport said on Sunday that twelve passengers aboard a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Ireland had sustained injuries during a period of turbulence. The aircraft, however, made a safe and planned landing.

Just before 1:00 p.m., Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight QR017 made a landing. Dublin time (1200 GMT), according to the airport.

“Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including Airport Police and our Fire and Rescue department, due to 6 passengers and 6 crew [12 total] on board reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey,” Dublin Airport said in a statement.

According to Irish station RTE, the event happened during the food and drink service and lasted less than 20 seconds, citing people arriving at the airport.

A "small number" of passengers and staff members had minor injuries during the flight, according to a statement from Qatar Airways, and they were seeking medical care.

The airline stated that an internal inquiry is being conducted on the turbulence, but it refrained from commenting more.

Five days before to the event, a Singapore Airlines aircraft from London to Singapore was forced to land in Bangkok owing to extreme turbulence, resulting in the death of a British man, 73, and the hospitalization of twenty others.

A 2021 research conducted by the U.S. revealed that airplane accidents connected to turbulence are the most prevalent category. The National Transportation Safety Board.

The U.S. government discovered that between 2009 and 2018, turbulence was the cause of over 33% of recorded airline accidents, with the majority leading to one or more significant injuries but no damage to the aircraft.
