Peruvian Bus Crash: 25 Dead, 13 Injured

LIMA—On Monday, local officials reported that a bus disaster in the northern Peruvian Andes highlands had left 25 people dead and 13 wounded.

According to Olga Bobadilla, the provincial prosecutor for the Cajamarca area, the bus flipped on Sunday night while it was traveling to the town of Sorochuco and plunged into a river. This was reported by local radio station RPP.

“Information is still being collected because the accident occurred at night on a fairly rugged road, an unpaved road, where the bus fell down into the river,” Bobadilla said.

The bus was reportedly coming from the adjacent town of Celendin, which declared three days of mourning in a statement released by the local council, according to local media sites.

In an interview with TV station Canal N, Celendin Commissioner Alexander Uriarte stated that there had been 25 fatalities and 13 injuries, including the bus driver.

Around two dozen people died in a disaster in September, and at least 24 people died when a bus fell down a cliff in January 2023. Accidents occur often on Peru's narrow highways.
