The death toll in the Philippines' 'Killer Curve' bus accident has risen to 17.

MANILA—A passenger who was critically injured when a bus crashed into a ravine in the central Philippines has died, bringing the total number of fatalities from the disaster to 17, police said on Wednesday.

The bus was transporting scores of people when its brakes failed on Tuesday afternoon in the central Province of Antique, according to Rhodora Cadiao, the local governor.

She stated that seven persons were in serious condition and four were stable and recuperating.

According to local reports, 28 people perished in the collision.

According to Ms. Cadiao, the bus was traveling to Culasi in Antique from the neighboring Province of Iloilo when its brakes failed on a twisting route and it dropped 30 meters (98.5 feet) into the ravine.

“We call that area the killer curve. It was already the second bus that fell off there,” Ms. Cadiao told DZRH radio station.

The Antique administration announced on Facebook that rescue activities at the site had ended after all visible remains had been recovered.

“The engineering design of this road is very faulty,” Ms. Cadiao said. “I want to condemn that road already.”

The Philippines is well-known for its loose public transit regulations and badly maintained highways.
