11 Chinese planes fly over the Taiwan Strait as the election approaches.

As the election approaches, 11 Chinese jets pass over the Taiwan Strait.

According to Taiwan's defense ministry, 11 Chinese airplanes breached the Taiwan Strait's critical median line on Wednesday. It is the island's unofficial border with mainland China. Taiwan dispatched its own soldiers to observe the situation.

Taiwan is about to elect a new president, prompting the military flex.

The registration deadline for candidates is this week. One day before the intrusion, the island's ruling Democratic Progressive Party filed its presidential ticket.

Beijing is an outspoken opponent of the party and has been accused of meddling in the island's elections. Instead, it demonstrates support for the island's biggest opposition party, which promises strong relations with Beijing if elected.

Taiwan vehemently opposes China's claims of sovereignty, claiming that only its people can decide its fate. The Chinese Communist Party has never controlled Taiwan.

On January 13, voters will go to the polls.
