'Arms Race': Australia Purchases $1.1 Billion in US Missiles

Canberra has revealed a fresh round of missile agreements with the United States. Monday, totaling a whopping $1 billion.

200 Tomahawk cruise missiles and 60 Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles are included in the package.

Tomahawk missiles have a range of more than 900 miles. Following the transaction, they will be owned by three countries: Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

According to Australian military Minister Richard Marles, the decision is supported by the country's most recent military review.

It suggests that Australia develop a plan to keep opponents at bay.

The acquisition comes on the heels of an interview with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong over the weekend.

She was questioned whether Australia and China were in a 'arms race' and if China was "making the world more dangerous?""

Wong declined to answer directly, but did offer the following:

“We know what is happening in our region. We’ve seen recently, exercises in the Taiwan Strait, we’ve seen events in the Philippines.”

Wong went on to say that Canberra has been open about its military buildup in the Indo-Pacific area.
