Officials said 10 people were killed, including three children, when strong winds hit a tourist camp in Central Russia.

MOSCOW—Ten people were killed, including three children, as severe winds ripped across central Russia, according to emergency services and a local official on Sunday.

The storm killed eight vacationers camping near Lake Yalchik in the Mari-El area on Saturday, according to Russia's emergency ministry.

A big number of trees fell in the area as a result of the high winds, including where the group's tents had been placed on a length of wild coastline inside the Mariy Chodra National Park, regional leader Yuri Zaitsev said on social media. Three children, he added, were among the deceased. The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal investigation to establish if the park's management company's dangerous or substandard services led to the deaths.

The storm wounded 76 people in the Volga Federal District, and thousands of houses lost power, according to emergency services.
